Norwell _Misterton Gagg Family
My links with the Gagg family are
through my grandfather,
Capt Frederick Hopkins of Norwell
Notts & Shanghai.Annie E Gagg was his half sister through
his mother, Elisabeth
Jackson of Norwell, by her first
husband,Joseph Gagg.
When Joseph Gagg died suddenly in
1858,Elisabeths father a corn miller, made haste to marry
her off to another possible partner in the mill,no doubt
also hoping for a grandson to follow in his footsteps, his
first having died as an infant. So in 1860 Elisabeth married
Humphrey Hopkin & in due course (1861) produced
Ebenezer/Fred.
I have never been able to find out
much about Joseph Gagg’s ancestry, except that his father,
John was a farmer.
This was stated on Joseph’s &
Elisabeth’s marriage certificate,1852.
Misterton & Norwell lie close
together,& in 1852 there were a number of Gagg’s in
Misterton.However, I couldn’t find a Joseph amongst them.
There were a lot of other threads to follow at that time, so
I set the Gagg puzzle aside.
When I visited your web site ,I
wondered if the Gagg Family could provide the missing piece?
One of your family trees suggests Hankerton, Wilts as a
possible place of origin – there seems to have been a lot of
Gagg’s named Joseph, John, Mary & Ann? Though again there
didn’t seem to be a Joseph son of John who would fit Joseph
Gagg of Norwell.
If anything comes up I’d be very
pleased to hear.
My grandfather Fred
(baptised) Ebenezer Jackson Hopkin ran away from home at the
age of 11 or 12, and went to sea.
His sister Annie Gagg must have
been very close to him for although he spent the rest of
his life on the China Coast.
He always remained in touch with
her, and used to send her money regularly for her support.
She in turn was fond of her little
brother,and took an interest in his four children.
He died in Shanghai in 1912,
leaving a young widow and family,and when Annie herself died
in 1930,she left each child 200 2/- shares in a family
Pharmacy, Jesse Boot & Son.These shares were sold soon after
(to the present generation’s regret) , Jesse Boot & son
having expanded spectacularly since that day!)

Many Gagg's in Notts,especially around Misterton,
Gagg Family web site points towards
hankerton,Wilts,where many Josephs,Johns, Anns &
Marys.

Alverti,relationship not stated,possibly Mary Jane
Gaggs daughter.
Note: known from family statement that Mary Jane
Gagg had two children.
