Mike and Jane
Gagg celebrated the birth of their
daughter Bethan Amelia Eileen Gagg born
on 23rd Feb 2004, weighing 6lb 4oz. best
wishes to them from all of the Gagg

My Gt uncle Fred celebrated his 95th
birthday on October 22nd 2003 ,at the
end of April 2004 I took his younger
sister Frances (86 in June 2004) and my
uncle Fred over to see Fred and his son
Fred and daughter in law Margaret. All
in good health and an enjoyable day all
round.

25th January 2003 Jack Anthony George
Gagg was born to Nikki & Mike, &
Kerri now has a baby brother to look out
for. Best wishes to them all from all of

George Gagg moved from London down to
Cliftonville in Kent in February 2002
after a lifetime in London he thought
the country & seaside folk needed him!
☺
Frances (Gagg) celebrated her 84th
birthday in June 2002 with her nephews
Christopher , Frederick her lifetime
friend Doll & myself. Frances has
corrected me on some of our family tree
& has given me many stories &
information to follow up.
Her brother Fred celebrated his 94th
birthday on October 22nd 2002 ,He takes
a walk around Harlow where he lives not
far from his son Fred every day &
tells Frances that he is thinking of
getting another bike so that he can get
around more.

Sadly John Gagg ,the author of
countless books on the waterways of
England passed away just before
Christmas 2001 .Our thoughts & best
wishes are with his family

On the evening of the 27th November 2000
Flo Gagg suddenly passed away. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank
all the many kind people , family &
friends from all over the world who sent
messages , phoned & sent cards to my dad
& my family. It has been a great comfort
to us to know that she was so loved &
that so many people were thinking of
us.
My Gt aunt Rebecca (Becky) Gagg died in
February 2001 aged 90 she is sadly
missed by Her husband Fred & all who
knew her.

It seems that the
Gagg family are even wider spread than
we first thought with 'Gagg's in Canada
(apart
from Pat Mikell nee
Gagg)Australia-Ireland -Wales , The US -
New Zealand -Germany-Brazil-
Argentina-Switzerland & various parts of
England.

The earliest Gagg we know of so far is a
Ralph Gagg born around the late 1200's
in Leicestershire, who moved to
Nottinghamshire. The earliest in Devon
is George Gagg born around 1522 in
Barnstable Devon.

There is a Monk
called Gagg listed at Newstead Abbey
which was built around 1171 in
Nottinghamshire.
The
Abbey & all its property was taken over
by Henry VIII in 1539 when he dissolved
the Monastaries.
He paid
the Prior £26-00 then sold it to Lord
Byron's ancestors for £800-00.
So the
Monk could be anytime from the 13th
Century when surnames generally started
to 1539.
I am
trying to find out more information on
him & will post any info I get here & on
the Forum.
1563 is the
earliest London entry we have, of a
Mary Gagg getting Married to a George
Flatt in
London,giving her a birth date around
1540.
The Gagg family
appears around the early 1600's in
Canada & the US.
Australia & New Zealand in the 19th
century.

Devon/Australian Family & I am working
on a family tree for the website which

I hope to be able
to link her family to the various Devon

Jon
recently contacted me & sent some info
on his family which originally came from
the Devon part of the family.
His
father moved to Worcester in the 1930's.
Jon has
put us in contact with Eric & Helen.
August
18th update, the info that
Helen,Jon,Eric & Leslie have given us
has helped enormously .
Eric ,
Jon's & Leslie's cousin Daphne in Canada
has also given us much valuable
information.
We are
gradually getting closer to linking
their family up.

A feature of the Gagg family seems to be
the practice of using surnames as part
of childrens christian(given) names.-Ann
Martin Gagg in Devon is one of the
Gagg's with Martin as a christian name
,also James Martin & in London the
Martin name is used as well. Also in
London- Thomas Topott Gagg-Charles
Topott Gagg-Christopher Topott Gagg
etc-John Wheelwright Gagg & all the
various Wheelwrights are examples of
this trend ,usually but not always it
seems to be the maiden name that is used
as a christian name (an early form of
the double surname).

Peter Gagg Of the
Hull/Sheffield family gave us some
valuable information & this can be found
on the Hull Gagg's page .
Roger Gagg of
Cardiff has & is giving us some good
information , My family & his are linked
.
His
grandfather Charles William Gagg was my
Great grandfatherChristopher's older
brother.
We Have now linked
Richard's family,Andrew's family & Peter
Gagg's(Hull)family together.
They are
all part of the Misterton Gagg family in
Notts(now South Yorkshire).
The London
families have a link with Notts through
Edward.T.Gagg born in London but living
in Notts at the time of the 1881 census
& a link with the Portsmouth/Devon
family.

Monte Gagg in
Colorado & his sister Lynn in Arizona,
their parents Bill & Margie Gagg live
in Arizona, they believe there family
was originally from Wales. Monte's &
Lynn have & given us some detail on
their family.
It looks
like they are part of the Glos family.
A new
tree is up on the website for them.
Our clan is certainly expanding!

James Gagg aged
96 on the 12th May this year.!.
We have just been
in touch with James who lives near
Faversham in Kent. I thought he might be
part of the London family but it turned
out that he is Andrew's dad's cousin
from Misterton.
He
remembers Howard well. He moved To
London many years ago to work. He says
that at his age he does not want to do a
lot of active things but still enjoys
reading. His brother lived in Nottingham
& has done some research on the Gagg
family. I have sent James some of our
information & he is going to send us
some of his.
James sent us a letter with some details
on the Misterton family ,also a Photo of
his Mother & father taken around the
late 1880's.
The information on
the Gagg monk also came from James.

Golden Wedding anniversary. 1st April

The
party was a great success,many presents
& cards being received by the golden
couple.

family ties were renewed & a great time
was had by all.

Fred & Rebecca
Gagg.
Sept 2000
My
Great uncle Fred aged 92 this year & his
wife Rebecca celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary on the 8th June this
year,Rebecca was 90 on the 25th June
.They are both fit & well .
Sept update: Fred
& Rebecca,their son Fred , his wife
Margaret & their son Alan came to see
us & along with my dad George we
caught up on old times, they gave me
lots of photos & info which will be
posted on the site & in the family tree
program as soon as I can do it.
Fred & Rebecca are
at 92 & 90 remarkably fit & do not look
anything like their age,I hope we all
are lucky enough to be that youthful
when we reach that age.
My dad greatly
enjoyed seeing his uncle & aunt & having
the chance to chat with them, Fred looks
so much like his brother Christopher (my
Grandad) which brought back good
memories for us.
I will post it
onto the photos page.One of the many
coincidences in the Gagg families is
that Fred Married Rebecca in 1930 in
London ,in 1880 Fred Gagg of Misterton
then Sheffield was married to a Rebecca
.

came from Pam Kovacs who sent me an
email with details of her Gagg family,
it turns out that they are part of Peter
Gagg's family.Who originated from
Misterton.Pam's letter below.
My grandmother
Florence Gagg was a daughter of
Frederick and Rebecca Gagg of Hull. She
married
Alfred
Dethick of Lincoln. They had two
children Phyllis, my mother who was born
18th April 1914 and my uncle Ronald
Alfred Dethick who was born 1st May 19th
1921. Both are still living in West
Molesey Surrey.
Ronald
married a German girl Elisabeth, and
they have two children Patricia and
Soren who is adopted.
Phyllis
my mother married a Guernseyman named
Edward Rowswell.
There
are three children named
Terrence,Barrington and myself Pamela.
Incidentally Alfred Dethick was a
Freeman of the city of Lincoln and
Ronald
inherited the Freemanship after his
fathers death.
Pam is going to
send us some more info from her mum &
aunt soon.
Many

Julie
Gagg graduated from Canterbury
university this summer & is taking up a
teaching post in Essex, Her father John
& the rest of the family are justifiably
proud of her.

called Memorials.This at the moment has
memorials to Gagg's who died in the Two
World wars.
We would like any
Inscriptions from Headstones or at a
Crematorium or from a Funeral card (not
just war memorials) of any Gagg's Male
or Female to put on this page.
With female married names tell us which
Gagg Family they are from.
If you know anything of the families
from the inscriptions let us know.

I would like to
ask everybody to share whatever
information they have regarding their
own branch of the family so that we can
build a comprehensive data base.
The
biggest problem we have is that whilst
everyone wants information not everyone
is giving back any info they have.
Even if
you do not know a lot ask your
relations-Aunts Uncles etc for anything
they can remember.
A lot of
the links we have made are from
conversations & info that Andrew Richard
& I have got from phoning-writing to
family & asking them what they know.This
has then enabled us to search for more
info & confirmation of what we have been
told.
So pick
up the phone,write that letter & help us
to link up the family.
Even if they are only stories they all
help. |
We have extensive
list of Gagg's spread throughout the
country. Also a list of German
Gagg's,Swiss,some Australian & US
Gagg's.
We also
have some census lists which give the
names occupations,age,place of birth &
where residing at the time of the
census.
Also a
few birth-marriage-death certificates.
These are available on the closed
part of the site please ask for a
password if you wish to view them
We could do with
copies of any certificates that you may
have.
So
that we can extend our collective
knowledge.
You can scan
them & email them to me or if you send
them I will copy them & return them
straight away.

Lots of
information has come in over the last
few years, some from Debbie & Neil in
New Zealand &, also from Roger in
Cardiff & Sheila & June in Whistable & a
lot from searches I have done & a lot of
info from Andrew.
Also
Anthea Royston Becker has given us some
info on the Norwell Gagg family(see
Norwell Gagg's page),we think there must
be a link with the Misterton family but
have not found it yet.
Gradually I am going through the info
we have & updating the trees & data
pages.
I have
six new small trees that I am trying to
enlarge with information that we already
had & the new info.
